Real Time Weather Data

Welcome to the Carolina Beach Fire Department. We are located at 9 South Dow Road, Carolina Beach. We are classed as a combination department because of our structure. We currently maintain a thirty five-man roster of thirty-four volunteers and a full-time paid fire chief. Our duties mostly consist of fire suppression and prevention but work with other agencies such as the Carolina Beach Police Department, the New Hanover Regional Hospital EMS, other surrounding volunteer fire departments, as well as the New Hanover County Fire Services. We respond to approximately 210 calls annually while maintaining an (ISO) insurance rating of five. We are currently working hard to improve our rating, which is now being governed by the NC Department of Insurance and is called the NC Response Rating System.

We strive to offer the best service possible, which includes updating and maintaining of equipment as well as constantly staying on the leading edge of new and improved training techniques. The department logged over three thousand training hours in 2001. In addition to training we also work together with our Utility Department in the inspection of the Town’s hydrant system. Some of our other functions involve emergency preparedness, which in Carolina Beach involves all departments working in unison, and is a year-round endeavor in order to lessen the impact on the citizens and visitors of our beach.

Fire prevention and safety is a 365-day a year effort and we strive to accomplish this by not limiting our efforts to only Fire Prevention Week. We have programs throughout the year such as the utilization of the New Hanover County Smokehouse at least twice a year with a program to target the youth of the Beach, as well as visits to our school, daycare centers and other clubs and organizations on the Beach. In addition we encourage changing the batteries in your smoke detectors at least twice a year. Also check your smoke detectors every thirty days and if your home contains a fossil fuel (kerosene, gas logs, etc.) heat source we strongly recommend you not be without a carbon monoxide detector.

Burning permits for natural vegetation are free and may be obtained by contacting us at least 24 hours before burning.  Application for the permit must be made with the Fire Chief to ensure that conditions are favorable for burning.

Should you have questions regarding fire safety, please do not hesitate to contact us at (910) 458-2985.
