The Planning Department works with citizens and community leaders to build a consensus on how the City should grow, both in the short and long term. This is accomplished through the coordination of a variety of land planning functions that range from creating a Land Use Plan for the future of Carolina Beach to reviewing all new development proposals to ensure they reflect this vision. Planning coordinates the City's land planning development review activities. Planning provides staff support to the City Council and the Planning & Zoning Commission regarding development applications.
Planning and zoning commission makes recommendation to town council. They review conditional use permit applications, map and text amendment, reviews subdivision plats and prepare studies and plans related to controlling and creating orderly growth and development of the town. They meet the second Thursday of the month at 6:30pm.
Carolina Beach is a member of the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) the regional transportation planning agency for the lower Cape Fear region of southeastern North Carolina.
