Clarendon Ave. Mulit-Use Path Project

(updated 10/11/19)

The project involves construction of a 10 foot wide paved multi-use-path(MUP) route beginning at the southeast intersection of Clarendon Ave. and Fourth St. adjacent to Carolina Beach Elementary School and Carolina Lake Park and  continuing west within the existing 90’ Clarendon street right-of-way approximately .5 miles terminating at Dow Rd.

The proposed MUP provides pedestrian and bicycle connectivity between the busy Central Business District and Boardwalk area, Carolina Lake Park, CB Elementary, surrounding neighborhoods, Mike Chappelle Park and the trailhead for the new section of the Island Greenway system, and the heavily travelled Dow Rd. corridor.

Use of the path will be limited to bicycles and pedestrian with no motorized vehicles allowed. This project is identified as a priority in the 2018 CB Pedestrian Plan, and the 2011 CB Bicycle Multi Use Transportation Plan.

Funding assistance for the project is being provided through the Transportation Alternatives Set Aside - Direct Attributable (TASA) grant funding. These are federal DOT funds administered through the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Currently the Bid/Construction Plans have been approved by NCDOT. Next steps include completion of Contract Documents and permitting prior to going to bid, possibly in November.

A Public Information Meeting was held on Thursday, September 19th from 5:30 – 7:00 pm in the Town Hall Council Chambers. Click here to view a summary of the meeting and materials distributed. A Public Hearing on the project is scheduled for the November 12, 2019 Town Council meeting beginning at 6:30 pm.
